Is E-learning the future of Education – Causes & Effects


Although the COVID-19 pandemic has increased the desire for individuals and mainly businesses to harness digital platforms to drive learning initiatives, the concept of e-learning is not new. E-learning (Electronic Learning) is the act of learning by leveraging digital resources such as computers, the internet, software programmes, and mobile devices.

Future of E-learning: Main Causes

Today, there are two main reasons that have contributed and will significantly impact how e-learning may become the only way of learning in the future. 

Technological advancement: 

Fundamental structural changes are ushered in by technology. Technology had offerred classrooms with digital learning tools, such as computers and hand-held devices to support both teaching and learning. It has modified the learning experience by supporting learning 24 hours a day, seven days a week. 

According to Erick Starck, one of the academic writers at Essays UK, it has increased student engagement and motivation; and accelerated learning. Technology has the potential to revolutionise education by bringing in a new type of connected learning.

Pandemic: 

There is no doubt that online learning was growing leaps and bounds even before the pandemic, but currently, it has become even more prevalent. According to one research, about 90% of students were taking online classes in 2020 due to the virus. The abrupt shift in the educational system has posed many challenges, especially for the fragile education systems of third world countries. However, the online education system has also significantly caused major concerns regarding the student’s studying and learning behaviours. There has been an increasing sign of procrastination in students due to delays in tests, exams, and online assessment procedures.

One of the best things about e-learning is that it offers flexibility for students to their individual needs and requirements. Students can get the lecture at any time and study through different resources to understand the concepts well. 

In online education, the teacher gives time to every student individually, which is not possible in a conventional classroom. This allows for greater interaction and thus more feedback.

Accessible:

Every individual today has access to the internet; thus, educational material, be it lectures, courses, teachers, or academic papers, all are just a click away from the learners. In the future, since the world is going to transform into a digital cosmos, it would be foolish to rule out e-learning as an inclusive part of the mainstream education system. 

Cost-effective:

School and college fees consume a whole part of the hard-earned money of individuals. In that perspective, e-learning is the cheapest and cost-effective way of learning and getting a degree. In future, when schools will shift online, it will be easy for students to get an education without spending millions on a degree.

Environment-friendly: 

There are millions of books published every day, and it takes hundreds of thousands of cars and vehicles that run on roads carrying students to schools and colleges. E-learning, therefore, can, in one way, save the planet from pollution and deforestation. 

Disadvantages of e-learning:

Just as there are benefits of e-learning, there are downsides to it. 

Lacks social interaction: 

Learning is not just about reading books and understanding the things people have discovered, but it is about making observations and understanding through physical demonstration that comes with social interaction. E-learning will omit the possibility of social interaction as they will be communicating through digital interaction.  

Cheating is unavoidable:

Through online education, the process of assessment will be critical. Since there would be no controller overseeing the students, it will be difficult to make students be honest while attempting their assessment papers. 

Procrastination:

Well, 2020 was quite a year. When students were limited to their homes, they spent most of their time on the internet. They were either unstoppably scrolling their social media pages or binge-watching Netflix. According to one report, the number of new social media pages skyrocketed during the pandemic. That is where almost everyone came forward to create their own content. That was absolutely okay as long as they did not compromise their studies. Students engaged in less important activities than focusing on their primary goals. And that is where procrastination comes into play. Procrastination is the behaviour and the act of avoiding the tasks that need to be done. It lures people into preferring doing an exciting and entertaining thing rather than doing their important work. Though students had almost all the time to complete their assignments and prepare for tests, they kept themselves engaged in other pleasurable acts.

According to psychology, when procrastinating, a person develops such a mindset that he should perform the basic obligations later and cater his personal gratifications instantly. So, students kept satisfying their lure for entertainment, and why not? There was no check and balance on their studies. I believe the fault also lies at the administration end. Almost half of the students, if not all, were promoted without any exam or assessment, which, in some ways, validates the reason for procrastination. The weak online education system was unable to offer the students the kind of independence they should have got to expand their intellectual abilities.

The reason for the procrastination in online learning is twofold: Students leveraged the flexibility that they were given for bad, and the system was not strong and consistent enough to ensure a sustainable progression of learning through the online system.
